Martin van de Ven has spent his professional career as a freelance musician, performing on clarinet, composing, directing, and teaching. A mainstay of the Canadian klezmer scene, Martin performs with Canada’s hottest klezmer band Beyond the Pale. A unique stylist, Martin van de Ven brings fire, elegance and humour to his performances with the award-winning group. He has composed, arranged for, and directed performances for Toronto production companies such as Jumblies Theatre, Theatre Columbus, the Azkenaz foundation and others.
He is currently involved in leading jam sessions for the Toronto Klezmer Society in support of their effort to make klezmer music available to a wider audience. Martin van de Ven is currently working as a music teacher for the Toronto District School Board. He is a firm believer in arts education--for children and adults alike--as a way to a healthy, well rounded and fulfilling life.
